It was on this tiny island where Saint-Petersburg was founded, political prisoners met their end and Russian Emperors were buried. Occupying almost the whole Zayachy Island surface, the fortress has several buildings worth seeing, not the least of which is Sts. Peter and Paul's Cathedral which houses nearly all Russian Emperors' tombs. The cathedral's spectacular golden spire can be seen from different parts of the citycenter.

The State Russian Museum

St. Isaac`s Cathedral

Church of the Savior on Blood

Church of the Savior on Blood which is also known as Church of the Resurrection of Christ is situated in the city center (just a few minutes' walk from our hotel).The reference to blood reminds us about the tragedy that took place here when revolutionaries assassinated Russian Emperor Alexander II in a bomb attack on March 1, 1881. Thus, the Church was constructed in order to commemorate this tragic event.

Alexander Nevsky Lavra

Alexander Nevsky Monastery was founded by Peter the Great to house the relics of Alexander Nevsky who became the patron saint of the newly-founded Russian capital. In 1797, it was raised to the rank of lavra, previously bestowed only upon Kiev Monastery (russ. Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra) and St. Sergius Trinity Monastery (russ. Troitse-Sergieva Lavra). Alexander Nevsky Monastery is particularly known for its necropolis containing the tombs of many famous Russians. It includes the graves that lie inside the churches as well as several large cemeteries. These are interesting not only for their famous "inhabitants" but also for their monumental mausoleums and elaborate funerary art.

The Chamber of Curiosities, also known as the Kunstkammer, is the first Russian museum of natural science.To fill the museum, Peter issued a decree ordering that all "unusual and curious creations of nature" should be brought to the capital. Enticed by a free glass of vodka, visitors began coming to admire astronomical instruments, maps, rare books, minerals and the tsar's rather weird collection of anatomical specimens. Nowadays most tourists are keen on visiting the Museum of Anthropology which contains the relics of Peter's queer collection of pickled anatomical specimens. Also the Kunstkammer is a fascinating assortment of costumes, weapons, artifacts and other everyday objects that conjure the past of different nations around the world.

Menshikov Palace

Situated on the Universitetskaya Embankment, this ornate ochre palace was once the residence of Peter the Great`s closest friend and advisor, and St Petersburg`s first governor, Alexander Menshikov. Much of the palace has now been restored to its original form, including Roman and Greek statues which Menshikov imported from Europe. On the first floor, a number of the palace rooms are decorated floor-to-ceiling with exquisite Dutch tiles, which have been meticulously restored. The neoclassical Grand Hall, decorated with gold and stucco, was used for state ceremonies, balls and banquets.

Yusupov palace

The long yellow colonnaded building overlooking the river Moika is Yusupov Palace. It was the principal residence of the Yusopovs, one of the wealthiest families in Russia, and close friends and allies to the Imperial court. The most popular of the lavish interiors is the exotic Moorish room, complete with a fountain and mosaics. The exhibition in the cellars recounts the story of the infamous Rasputin murdered here by a group of aristocrats led by Prince F. Yusupov.

Peter the Great's Cabin

Coming out on Petrovskaya Embankment you'll find yourself in front of the first residential building constructed in St.Petersburg, Peter the Great's Cabin. The Cabin's frame was erected on 26 May 1703. The carpenters built a small cabin from which Peter the Great could supervise the Peter and Paul Fortress construction. It took just three days to build the cabin but it stands until now, having already become a museum. The cabin is very small and consists just of two rooms: a dining room and a bedroom. To protect the cabin from crumbling it was covered with tent-shaped pavilions, a wooden one in the 18th century and a stone one in the 19th century, the letter having survived up to now. Inside the pavilion there is an exhibition devoted to the early period of the city's construction.

Peterhof

Russia's imitation on Versailles, Peterhof, 34 km West of St Petersburg, was the primary country residence of Russian Emperors, especially during the 18th and early 20th centuries. Founded by Peter the Great and expanded by Empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, it comprises several dozen buildings, nine of which are now museums. All of these are worth seeing, but Peterhof is best known for its gardens, parks, and magnificent fountains. The tour around the parks and the Grand Palace can be an enjoyable day out during your stay in Saint Petersburg.

Strelna

Today among the palace expositions Russian painting, decorative and applied arts of 18th and 19th centuries, including M. Rostropovich's and G. Vishnevskaya's world-famous collection, are widely presented. At the grottos of Konstantin Palace wine cellars with one of the greatest collection of elite wines in the world are placed. The palace is surrounded by a beautiful park extending to the coast of the Gulf of Finland.

Gatchina
